WCQ: Portugal loses, France draws in openers

European champion Portugal opened its World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign on Tuesday with a 2-0 loss at 10-man Switzerland. Euro 2016 runner-up France could only manage a 0-0 draw at Belarus in its opening qualifier.

Breel Embolo, 19, put Switzerland ahead while Admir Mehmedi added to the Swiss lead six minutes later. Portugal was missing injured captain Cristiano Ronaldo but couldn't take advantage of a red card to Granit Xhaka.

The closest France came to scoring against Belarus at the Borisov Arena was when Olivier Giroud hit the woodwork.
