NWSL Playoffs: Thorns and Spirit open at home

For the Portland Thorns and Washington Spirit, this weekend's semifinals will mark the first time they've hosted NWSL playoff games. An NWSL playoff record crowd is expected when the Thorns host the Western New York Flash on Sunday. The semifinals kick off Friday night when the Spirit plays the Chicago Red Stars at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

WASHINGTON-CHICAGO. Chicago got the best of the Spirit last Saturday with a 3-1 win that opened the door for the Thorns to claim the NWSL Shield the next day. The Spirit won the first meeting, 2-0.

By the Numbers: 5 -- the number of goals allowed by the Spirit in 10 home games, the fewest in the NWSL.

PORTLAND-WNY FLASH. The Thorns claimed their first NWSL Shield, concluding the regular season on a four-game winning streak. They set a new club record for the most wins (12) and points (41) in a single campaign. The current streak included a 3-2 win over the Flash at Providence Park on Sept. 11.
