College Women: USC hands Stanford first defeat

USC handed top-ranked Stanford its first loss of the season when it beat the Cardinal, 3-0, setting a school record with its 10th straight win.

The Trojans got two goals from senior midfielder Morgan Andrews, and Alex Anthony added the third when she caught Stanford keeper Alison Jahansouz off her line and scored from 40 yards. Cardinal keeper Jane Campbell was out due to a red card picked up in the Cardinal’s previous game against Washington.
“This was a great win for us. I thought the team played with great heart and was able to withstand Stanford’s great pressure,” said USC coach Keidane McAlpine. "Stanford is a great team,” It also shows what is possible. We have to keep working and keep grinding, but today was a special win for us.”

On Sunday, the Trojans' 10-game winning streak ended when they fell to No. 20 California, 1-0, on freshman Abigail Kim's 86th-minute goal.

"This was a battle of two very talented teams," Cal coach Neil McGuire said. "USC gave us everything they had and more. I'm proud of how the team responded and glad we were able to sneak in a goal late."

Cal, which tied UCLA, 1-1, in its first game on its Los Angeles swing, is one of three unbeaten teams in Pac-12 play. Stanford recovered from its loss to USC to beat UCLA, 3-2, on Maddie Bauer's golden goal in the 103rd minute.
