What They're Saying: Peter Vermes

"I have no comment. The national team has nothing to do with Sporting Kansas City, and vice versa. This has nothing to do with either. ... He's always been in my plans. He's not ever been out of my plans.”

-- Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes when asked to respond to Jurgen Klinsmann's comment -- "You wonder right now why he's not playing in Kansas City" -- after Besler went 90 minutes in Tuesday's 1-1 U.S. tie with New Zealand. Besler sat out the last two Kansas City games and has appeared in only 16 of 32 MLS games this season. (MLSSoccer.com)

Vermes' comment is puzzling. JK was talking about "playing" not "plans". If part of the "plan" is for Besler not to play for the MNT, then it will be successful if he gets insufficient playing time.

#MLSpissingcontest Vermes was a defender--even got 66 caps back in the day when no one knew the roster on the USMNT. He NEVER earned much in MLS. Besler ($700K) is way more expensive than ABdul-Salaam ($63K), Coelho ($275K), Dia ($51K), Ellis ($72K), Myers ($200K), Opara ($125K), Palmer-Brown ($65K), Sinovic ($105K). This is an old-school MLB freeze-out like you'd get pre-70's, and probably some Vermes baggage to boot. When 4 of 9 defenders are making less than $100K/year, makes you wonder the intelligence of players union management pushing for free agency instead of a better minimum. But at least SKC is in the playoffs! Winning!

Besler has always played consistently good with the USMNT. Evidently Vermes, this season, feels he has better options. Got to believe Vermes wouldn't jeopardize wins. Cynics could see it different. If I'm Besler, looking for playing time with another club in the off season, might be the goal. If not another MLS club, I would think a foreign club would match what he earns here.

The only conclusion I can come to is that Besler must not be playing well for KC. Why else would Vermes sit him so much? If it is a personality issue then Besler needs to find a new team.
