College Women: 'World-class' free kick gives Irish big win

Notre Dame beat North Carolina for the first time ever in South Bend when a goal by freshman forward Jennifer Westendorf on a free kick gave the Irish a 1-0 victory in ACC women's action.

In the 57th minute, Westendorf was pulled down just outside the box. Her free kick curled over and around the UNC wall and into the top right corner of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

"She was just finding great holes in behind, nice little seams that she was running in," said Notre Dame coach Theresa Romagnolo. "She scored a great goal and that free kick came out of her hard work to hold onto a ball and what a fantastic free kick. It was just world class."

The Irish dominated the second half as they outshot North Carolina 12-6, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal.

"I think we just got a little bit tougher," added Romagnolo. "We were stepping out and pressing a little bit better. On our set pieces, we were marking tighter and we took care of the ball even a little bit better."

UNC came into the game with a 4-0-1 record at Notre Dame.
