"Carlos Alberto was like a brother to me, one of my best friends."

-- Former German great Franz Beckenbauer on Brazilian Carlos Alberto, who died of a heart attack on Tuesday. Beckenbauer captained West Germany to the 1974 World Cup title four years after Alberto captained Brazil to its third world championship.     One of the players from my youth that inspired and intensified my love for the game ... Once observed him warming up before a match with Pele, my idol ... the two struck the ball back & forth for about 4-5 minutes, all first-time touches, from distances varying from 10 yards to 50 yards, using every surface you might imagine could be used, at every pace, at varying heights, with every spin/bend imaginable ... I was mesmerized by their flawless technique
