Georgetown captured its first Big East title when it beat top seed Marquette, 2-0, in the tournament final at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.
Georgetown’s
Grace Damaska opened
the scoring after settling the ball at the top of the box before turning and firing in a strike over the outstretched arms of Marquette keeper
Maddy Henry.
Rachel Corboz
added the insurance goal with her 10th goal of the year in the 52nd minute after settling a rebound.
The win was the Hoyas' first in three trips to the final after losses in 2012 and
2014. They improved to 16-2-3 overall, tying the school record for wins in a season
"I'm happy for this team," Hoya coach
Dave Nolan said afterward. "They're a great bunch
of kids. I'm blessed. We've had so many great teams over the years and so many wonderful kids, but this group, last year and this year, have been a lot of fun. They just come every day and work hard.
They just don't give you an ounce of concern."
