Hexagonal: Road teams sweep all three games

Panama pulled a stunning upset in the opening game of the Hexagonal, beating Honduras, 1-0, at San Pedro Sula's Estadio Olimpico, one of Concacaf's most dreaded venues. In the other Hexagonal game, Costa Rica won at Trinidad & Tobago, 2-0, to give the road teams a clean sweep of all three games on Day 1.

Fidel Escobarscored the only goal for Panama on a free kick in the 22nd minute. The Canaleros are the only team in the Hexagonal that has never gone to the World Cup. The win was just their second in 21 Hex games. The other was at home in 2013, a 2-0 win over Honduras.

Four MLS players -- Armando Cooper (Toronto FC), Anibal Godoy (San Jose Earthquakes), Alberto Quintero (San Jose Earthquakes) and Blas Perez (Vancouver Whitecaps) -- started for Panama and three former MLS players -- Jaime Penedo, Gabriel Gomez and Gabriel Torres -- also played for the Canaleros.

The loss puts enormous pressure on Honduras, which was the only team to open with two games at one. It will face a must-win game on Tuesday against Trinidad & Tobago.

Both Tico goals were scored by MLS players: Vancouver's Christian Bolanos and New York City FC's Ronald Matarrita.
