Hex Files: Costa Rica injuries mount

Costa Rica will be without two starters -- center back Francisco Calvo and right back Cristian Gamboa -- for Tuesday's game against the USA at San Jose's Estadio Nacional. The Ticos were already without starting center backs Oscar Duarte and Giancarlo Gonzalez, who missed the 2-0 win at Trinidad & Tobago with injuries.

Calvo is injured while Gamboa picked up his second yellow card of qualifying in the win at Trinidad & Tobago. Gamboa set up teammate Christian Bolanos for the first goal against T&T.

The Vancouver Whitecaps' Kendall Waston and former MLS player Michael Umana should start at center back for the Ticos.

Coach Oscar Ramirez's options at right back are Jose Salvatierra or Allan Miranda. He could also move New York City FC's Ronald Matarrita to right back and replace him with Everton's Bryan Oviedo or Leonardo Gonzalez, formerly of the Seattle Sounders, on the left side.

Miranda and Gonzalez were called up as defensive replacements from Herediano.

MEXICO. Mexico headed to Panama for their second game of the Hexagonal on Tuesday without three players who played in Friday's 2-1 win over the USA: Andres Guardado (hamstring injury), Carlos Salcedo (suspension) and Carlos Vela (back in Spain for the birth of his first child).
