So.... the Far West is only sending eight teams to the big dance! Why does this always seem to make my blood boil?
I guess you don't count Denver or New Mexico in your Far West count? If you include them that's 10.
Part of the Far West problem is that the PAC-12 doesn't give Soccer the same notoriety that the ACC does. When cornerstone schools like USC, Arizona, ASU, Oregon don't even compete in the sport it deteriorates the value of the league. It's unfortunate because I really think those schools could make money off of men's soccer programs in the same way the UVa, Clemson, UNC, MD and now Syracuse are.
OK, AB, point conceded, still for some very strange reason, the only time USC competed in the program, was in the very early '70's with Nuri Ertuk as coach, who tried hard as hell to get the AD to move up the team to varsity status, as for the Arizona schools, I know for a fact there is high interest there as in Oregon. However, just because the PAC 12 doesn't give it due diligence because of the potentials, also take into account non Pac12 teams that play D1, then those in DII, and lastly DIII. And we're not counting the NAIA schools, that are supported by more than 100 community colleges in California (that don't compete in the NAJCAA - because many years some idiot decided the states com colleges didn't field enough teams and thus these com college players are stuck but many do get recruited to four-year teams) Sorry, didn't mean to digress, still it doesn't take away from my concerns, and no I don't count Denver or NM since very rarely do they wander over the rockies or the Mojave desert to play in the "wild-wild-west"!

We are all aware of how good the UC and Cal-State schools are at soccer. But the unfortunate fact is they don't bring the notoriety of nationally acclaimed sports programs like USC, Oregon and the Arizona universities. Thousands of fans aren't going to showup in Westwood for a UCLA/UCI or UCLA/UCSB game. Stage a UCLA/USC rock/paper/scissor contest and you're likely to get thousands of attendees.
We are also aware of how good the D2 schools are on this side of the Sierra's and the NAIA's and Community Colleges. It would be great for the sport on a national level to have more of the power conferences pumping money into and figuring out they can make money off of soccer programs.
