College Women: Defending champ Penn State goes out

Penn State's national title defense ended quickly in the second round as Virginia scored in the first minute and pulled away for a 3-0 win over the Nittany Lions, who were outshot, 20-4.

Meghan Cox scored on a header off Alexis Shaffer's free kick in the first minute, Betsy Brandon extended the lead in the 23rd minute and Taylor Ziemer finished the scoring the 75th minute.

The Nittany Lions were without five players -- Rose Chandler, Maddie Elliston, Ellie Jean, Emily Ogle and Kaleigh Riehl -- who missed the 2015 season to represent the USA at the Under-20 World Cup, which is being played in Papua New Guinea.

“They have an exceptional team," Virginia head coach Steve Swanson, "and when you consider how many players they have lost to the U-20 World Cup, it is even more impressive. I think it’s great they support their players' efforts to compete at the international level, especially when it obviously affects their college team. Having said that, we are very proud of our team and how they performed today. That was some of our best soccer all year on both sides of the ball.”

Swanson had coached the USA to the 2012 U-20 World Cup title.
