College Men: Langsdorf does it again for Stanford

In his three seasons at Stanford, Jordan Morris never had a season like his former classmate Foster Langsdorf, who scored his 15th goal of the season -- the most by a Cardinal in 35 years -- and eighth game-winner to lead defending champion Stanford to a 2-0 win at Louisville that sends it to its fifth College Cup.

The deciding goal came in the 64th minute when Langsdorf rose up in a crowd and flicked freshman Derek Waldeck's corner kick off a Louisville defender and into the goal. He leads the nation with his eight game-winners while his 15 goals are the most by a Stanford player since Willie Guicci scored 22 in 1981.

The second goal came 15 minutes later when Sam Werner scored on a free kick from 30 yards that gave Louisville keeper Stefan Cleveland no chance.

The shutout was the fifth straight in the postseason for Stanford dating back to its 2015 championship season.

"I don’t think it always went our way in midfield and up front," Stanford head coach Jeremy Gunn said, "but our back four was incredible yet again and kept Louisville at bay. Our players showed that wonderful commitment to working hard defensively while the other team was in ascendancy and we were still carving out great chances in a tight game.”

Morris is one of five starters from a year ago whom the Cardinal had to replace. They accounted for 53 percent of the Cardinal's goals and 48 percent of its assists.

“We’ve said it all along,” Gunn commented. “We graduated out incredible players and people that had been heartbeat of the team. What you hope as a staff is to create a culture that celebrates graduating on great players and then cultivates the next great player to come along. That’s what we’ve managed to do this year.”

Morris scored 13 goals in 18 games in 2015 (missed some time due to prolific NT duties), scored 2* goals in the NCAA title game, and won the Hermann.

Langsdorf hasn't had the better year yet.

*Morris was awarded a PK vs. Clemson but Gunn had Vincent convert it. Morris coulda/shoulda had a hat-trick -- in the NCAA title game!!
