MLS Moves: Saprissa captain Machado signed by Houston

Aldolfo Machado, an international teammate of Sounders centerback Roman Torres, has been acquired by Houston in a transfer from Costa Rican powerhouse Saprissa.

Machado, 31, has played 130 games for Saprissa and won the Costa Rican league’s foreign player of the year award three times since joining the club in December, 2013. He has also earned 67 caps for Panama.

“Adolfo Machado is a player we’ve been tracking for quite some time,” said Dynamo general manager Matt Jordan in a team statement. “We are extremely pleased to welcome a defender of his quality and pedigree to the Houston Dynamo.

“We believe we are adding not only one of the best defenders in CONCACAF and Central America, but also a consummate professional, a proven winner, and someone who will provide stability and leadership to our back line.”

Machado (6-foot, 160 pounds) has played for Alianza and San Francisco in his native country, and also in Guatemala and Honduras as well as Costa Rica. He and Torres are regularly paired together in the Panama back line, though he played a lot of right back last June at the Copa America Centenario when Torres was injured. He lined up centerback when Saprissa played Portland Sept. 14 and Oct. 19 in the Concacaf Champions League, and by extracting four points from those games Saprissa advanced to the CCL quarterfinals at the Timbers’ expense.

“Adolfo is an excellent player that is very familiar with CONCACAF as the captain of Saprissa and as a leader of the Panamanian national team," said Dynamo head coach Wilmer Cabrera. “He is a versatile player that can play multiple positions in the back line.

“He’s won four league titles with Saprissa and it says a lot when you see what he has accomplished with that team that demands excellence. They just won a title in the last two weeks. He is a leader and he will be key for us in the locker room and on the field with his speed, strength, and play in the air.”
