Making a List: American champions in Mexico

Jose Torres' Tigres won Mexico's Torneo Apertura with a dramatic victory in a shootout after it rallied to tie Club America in the second leg of the Gran Final delayed two weeks by America's participation in the Club World Cup. Torres, who didn't dress in the second leg, is the first American to win the Mexican championship three times.

Tigres fell behind in overtime but Jesus Duenas' header in the 118th minute evened the series at 1-1. Argentine Nahuel Guzman saved all three America penalty kicks as Tigres won the shootout, 3-0.

Torres, 29, didn't play in the Gran Final on his first championship team, Pachuca, but was a sub when Tigres beat UNAM a year ago in the 2015 Apertura championship. He made 15 appearances in the 2016 Torneo Apertura -- 13 in the first phase and two in the playoffs.

Fellow American Luis Silva dressed once but made no appearances for Tigres in Liga MX. His only two appearances were in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.

Edgar Castillo and William Yarbrough have both won two Mexican titles. Six other Americans have won one Mexican title.

Ventura Alvarado, who won the 2014 Apertura with Club America, was on the America bench in both legs of the Apertura Gran Final. He started the second leg of the quarterfinals and both legs of the semifinals as the right back in America's 5-3-2.
