U.S. Abroad: Pulisic comes close in Dortmund loss

Christian Pulisic forced a big save from Benfica goalkeeper Edersonin the 84th minute as Borussia Dortmund fell, 1-0, in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 series with the Portuguese club.

Borussia Dortmund had 69 percent of the possession in Lisbon, outshot Benfica 14-5, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot a 58th-minute penalty kick straight to Ederson as Kostas Mitroglou’s close-range strike after a goal area scramble held up.

Pulisic replaced Marco Reus in the 82nd minute and two minutes later hit a volley from the edge of the penalty area that Ederson batted away after a deflection. Pulisic also won a free kick, a corner kick, hit another volley over the crossbar, and sent in promising cross. The 18-year-old American also received a yellow card for an 84th-minute foul.

Borussia Dortmund hosts the return leg March 8.
