Turner Sports and Univision have snatched the U.S. media rights to the UEFA Champions League away from Fox Sports, starting in 2018-19, multiple sources told
Sports Business Daily's John Ourand
Turner, whose last men's soccer coverage
was its much-criticized coverage
(with commercial breaks) of the 1990 World Cup in Italy,
will pay more than $60 million a year over the three-year deal. Sports Business Daily reported that Univision agreed to pay around $35 million per year for the Spanish-language rights.
Four bidders vied for the UCL rights: Turner Sports, Fox Sports, NBC Sports and BAMTech (digital firm that planned to partner with ESPN).
Fox Sports held UCL rights in English and Spanish
over the terms of two contracts: 2009-15 (six years) and 2015-18 (three years). Before Fox Sports, ESPN was the UCL rights holder.
