FC Dallas fans will have to wait a while to get their first look at left back Anibal Chala in a league game.
The team has confirmed he is recovering from sports-hernia surgery performed Feb. 28, and will be out of action for about a month. He did not play in the Concacaf Champions League series against Arabe Unido won by FCD, 5-2, on aggregate. Veteran Maynor Figueroa started at left back last weekend in a 2-1 defeat of the Galaxy at StubHub Center.
Chala, 20, was signed as a Young Designated Player last December after playing 118 games for El Nacional in his native Ecuador. He also has six caps with his country’s U-20s for which he played with FCD teammate Carlos Gruezo.
FCD paid a reported $600,000 for his rights. At the time of the signing, FCD technical director Fernando Clavijo said of him, “This was an area we needed to improve and bring someone in, so it was easy for us to make the decision. There were a lot of teams after him but when you have a countryman like Carlos Gruezo, it will be easier for him to get adjusted. The fans are really going to be excited when they see him play.”
