What They're Saying: Jim Curtin

"His parents developed Christian. That's where that needs to be mentioned. His dad was a former pro and had a great plan for his kids all along. Did Chelsea develop this player? Did Red Bull develop him? Did Dortmund develop him? Did Bayern Munich do it? Parents develop kids, first and foremost, and he's been in a great environment in that regard."

-- Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin on the debate about who is responsible for developing Christian Pulisic, who represented the Union on a U-15 team at the 2012 Generation Adidas Cup. (Philly Voice)

Arena said: “Richie Williams had him in Bradenton for two years with the Under-17s. So don’t attribute all his success to Borussia Dortmund, not that they don’t deserve a lot of credit. He was grown as a player in the U.S. Don’t p--- on our system, which everyone wants to do." Our system appears to no longer require college soccer players. For every Jordan Morris there are thousands of college players that will suck in perpetuity because they hit 18 and stopped improving. THAT'S our system. Until college soccer is "fixed", promising talent will have to go to Europe after age 15. They bypass MLS and grow at clubs over there.

Putting aside the fact that it's false to state that everyone should go to Europe at 15, most players can't go until 18 unless they are able to get an EU passport like Pulisic was. Even then they have to wait until 16 per FIFA guidelines.

Man I wouldn't be bragging about the success of Richie Williams. Richie Williams screwed up that U17 team about as bad as could be.

Don would say DAs developed Pulisic. Haha. Now what's he going to say?

Ok then I guess we don't need any developmental system, just parents.

One of the best Academy's DOC seems to think so. Maybe you know better.
