NWSL Rewind: Injuries mar opening weekend

Knee injuries to FC Kansas City forward Amy Rodriguez in her first game back after sitting out the 2016 season while on pregnancy leave and Washington Spirit midfielder Joanna Lohman marred the opening weekend of play in the NWSL.

Rodriguez, who had scored the winning goal in the 2015 NWSL final, was injured six minutes after she scored the second goal of the game in FC Kansas City's 2-0 win over Boston. A-Rod was stretchered off with an injury to her left knee. As of Monday afternoon, there was no confirmation of the extent of the injury.

Sydney Leroux also scored in their first NWSL game back. She missed the 2016 season because of the birth of her first child after being traded to FC Kansas City to be close to her husband, Sporting KC star Dom Dwyer.

The Spirit lost Lohman for the season when she tore her left ACL in Saturday’s opener against North Carolina. She is the fourth player out with a knee injury. Goalkeeper Kelsey Wys, defender Caprice Dydasco and forward Cali Farquharson are sidelined with serious injuries. A month after being traded to Seattle from Washington, Canadian star Diane Matheson also suffered a knee injury that will sideline her for the season.

Lohman, 34, is one of the longest-serving players in U.S. women's pro soccer, having played all three seasons in WPS and the last four in the NWSL. Having lost stars Ali Krieger (traded to Orlando) and Crystal Dunn (signed with Chelsea), the Spirit was counting on Lohman for her leadership in midfield.

CROWD COUNT. As part of a day-night doubleheader with the MLS Timbers, the Portland Timbers drew 16,145 fans – the largest crowd for a home opener in club history – on Saturday afternoon at Providence Park for their 2-0 win over Orlando. The Thorns crowd was more than the crowds for the other four NWSL openers combined.
