MLS Injuries: Wrist surgery sidelines Artur

A fractured wrist that required surgery will keep Columbus SC midfielder Arturout of competitive play for a few weeks.

Artur suffered the injury in the first minute of Crew SC’s league match with New York Red Bulls last weekend. He left the field in the sixth minute and was diagnosed with a distal radius fracture in his left wrist that was repaired Monday by Dr. Marlo Van Steyn at Orthopedic One in Columbus

“It’s a shame that in the first minute that we had to substitute Artur,” said Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter in his postgame comments. “He’s been doing great so far and we were looking forward to seeing how he was going to react in this game.”

The 21-year old, Brazilian midfielder joined Crew SC on a one-year loan from Sao Paulo FC two months ago and had registered one assist in eight appearances (seven starts). Mohammed Abu replaced Artur against the Red Bulls and is one of several candidates who may get time while he recovers, starting this weekend against New York City FC.

Defender Alex Crognale, who also left the Red Bulls game injured, suffered a sprained ankle that Berhalter said didn't appear to be serious. He will be monitored and re-evaluated during the week.
