MLS: Gerso blossoms in new role for Sporting KC

The question surrounding Sporting Kansas City has been, can anyone besides Dom Dwyer score goals? With Dwyer suspended on Saturday, 20-year-old Latif Blessing bagged a brace in a 2-2 tie at Orlando City. On Wednesday, another offseason signing, Gerso, had all three goals -- the first SKC hat trick in seven years -- in a 3-0 win over Seattle.

The 26-year-old Guinea-Bissau native scored all three goals in the second half as Sporting Kansas City extended its club-record home winning streak to 15 regular-season matches with a dominating display after the break.

Sporting KC acquired Gerso from Portugal's Belenenses and signed him as a Designated Player. He played as a winger in Portugal, but his new MLS club hoped to get him in more scoring situations.

"That wasn't necessarily his responsibility on the team he played on," Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said. "So when he came here, the thing that I said to him is I said that he's going to find himself in a lot of positions that he didn't find himself in on his old team, which is in front of the goal. So he's going to have to get a mentality that you're going to have to take those chances as opposed to just always giving the ball to someone else because he was more of a provider as opposed to being the scorer."

Vermes said Gerso is getting more comfortable as each week passes and creating chances for himself and others. Gerso was a little fortunate as deflections contributed to the first two goals but the third finished off some nifty work by Benny Feilhaber and Graham Zusi.

"And the fact that he's taking those is huge for us," Vermes added. "Because as you all know, goal-scoring has to come by committee; it can't be by one guy or two guys, it's got to be multiple guys. And the fact that he's getting on the board is huge for us."

Sometimes it's just about the players playing their roles and trying to win the game as oppose to scoring goals and losing the game. Case in point Ronaldo is the main scorer and creator of shots so at any given time all other players are supporters. It works because his team is always wining trophies. Not saying there cannot be better but it works for them.
