NASL: Puerto Rico FC fires Whitbread and Sillett

Last-place Puerto Rico FC, owned by NBA star Carmelo Anthony, fired head coach Adrian Whitbread and technical director Neil Sillett, who were both hired by the NASL team for its 2016 launch.

The firings came four days after a 4-3 loss to the New York Cosmos kept Puerto Rico FC in last place with three points in seven games.

“We want to thank Neil and Adrian for the role they played in building the inaugural Puerto Rico FC team," said PRFC president Tom Payne. "We truly appreciate their hard work and the passion they brought to their jobs every day. Unfortunately the results have not improved this season and it is time to make a change for the benefit of all parties.”

Marco Velez will be the interim head coach and Jack Stefanowski will stay on as an assistant.

Puerto Rico FC finished ninth in the 11-team NASL in the fall standings. It didn't play in the spring half of the 2016 season.
