NWSL Rewind: Spirit's struggles continue in Pugh debut

Mallory Pugh made her debut for the Washington Spirit in front of a hometown crowd of 3,714 fans, but the last-place Spirit fell, 1-0, to visiting FC Kansas City, dropping to 1-4-1.

At 19 the youngest player in the NWSL, Pugh came on for Arielle Ship in 54th minute. Alexa Newfield scored the lone goal of the game with her first NWSL goal for FC Kansas City, which won its second game of the season.

The closest the Spirit came to scoring was in the 22nd minute when Kristie Mewis hit the crossbar.

-- Sarah Killion scored her league-high fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick in Sky Blue FC's 2-1 win over Houston. Four of the former UCLA star's five goals have come from the penalty spot.

-- U.S. national team keeper Ashlyn Harris had to leave Orlando's 1-1 tie at Seattle on Sunday with what appeared to be a hip injury after injuring herself on a goal kick in the 24th minute. Newcomer Caroline Stanley finished the game in goal.

The North Carolina Courage drew the largest crowd of the week -- 4,786 fans -- on Sunday for its 3-1 loss to Chicago. It is averaging 5,223 fans a week, more than the NASL's North Carolina FC is averaging in Cary -- 4,855 fans a game.
