Hex Files: T&T aims to go 'toe-to-toe' with USA in Rockies

Trinidad & Tobago arrived in Colorado a week ago, giving the Soca Warriors two weeks to prepare in altitude for the Hexagonal match against the USA on June 8 in Commerce City, home of the Rapids' Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

T&T Boulder Roster:
GOALKEEPERS: Jan Michael Williams, Marvin Phillip, Adrian Foncette.
DEFENDERS: Daneil Cyrus, Alvin Jones, Triston Hodge, Carlos Edwards, Curtis Gonzales.
MIDFIELDERS: Andre Boucaud, Hashim Arcia, Leston Paul, Nathan Lewis, Jomai Williams.
FORWARDS: Jamille Boatswain, Akeem Roach, Hughtun Hector, Willis Plaza, Shahdon Winchester.

T&T is practicing at the University of Colorado's at Prentup Field in Boulder, where it beat the PDL's FC Boulder, 1-0, on Sunday evening. A 51st -minute goal by Mexican-based forward Shahdon Winchester was the difference in the friendly.

Head coach Dennis Lawrence brought 18 players to Boulder though he has not named his team for the U.S. qualifier. The FIFA fixture window doesn't open until June 5, so all players have not been released.

Lawrence, the third T&T coach in six months, took over as national team coach following the resignation of Belgian Tom Saintfiet, who quit after just five weeks on the job in January.

T&T started five MLS players -- Mekeil Williams (Colorado), Cordell Cato (San Jose), Kevin Molino (Minnesota United), Joevin Jones (Seattle) and Kenwyne Jones (Atlanta United) -- in Lawrence's first qualifier in charge of the team, a 1-0 win over Panama. The Soca Warriors are in last place in the Hexagonal with just three points after four games.

Hexagonal Standings:
10 Mexico 3-1-0 5/1
7 Costa Rica 2-1-1 7/3
5 Panama 1-2-1 2/2
4 USA 1-1-2 8/7
4 Honduras 1-1-2 4/9
3 Trin. & Tobago 1-0-3 2/6

“The main thing is to make sure that, from an acclimatisation point, we are well prepared physically,” Lawrence told the TTFA web site. “In terms of how we intend to approach the games, we are going to be on the front foot and try to compete with them. We are going to go toe-to-toe because I don’t think we can afford to sit back and allow the U.S. to take full control of the game. It’s not going to be easy because historically it’s not a generous place for us to go to but we need to try and start thinking differently now and believe we can go there and accomplish things."

The USA has beaten the Soca Warriors six straight times by shutout at home in World Cup qualifying. The only blemish was a 1-1 tie at El Camino College in Torrance, California, in 1989 when the USA conceded the tying goal by T&T's Hutson Charles in the 88th minute.

USA vs. T&T in WCQ
(U.S. home game):
2016: USA 4-0
2009: USA 3-0
2008: USA 3-0
2005: USA 1-0
2001: USA 2-0
1996: USA 2-0
1989: Tie 1-1
1985: USA 1-0
1985: USA 2-1

These Trinis have lots of talk but no depth.. US will win very easily.

Thom, please let me know why that story does not holds true after the game. You are seriously dreaming if you think these Trinis can come from the tropics to Colorado in an unfriendly environment and win against a highly motivated US team.. never happen never will in a qualification tournament. If and only if the game was in Trinidad my answer would be slightly different.

    Mr. Quarterback TD:
Please take this in the spirit it is intended: Your dismissal of T&T reminds me of what the captain of the Philistines
(some central defender named Goliath) said about that little striker on the other team named David...Fear no one BUT Respect everybody.

I think the US will win but QTD is just a big US cheerleader. He has no sense of reality. He has said the US U20s will easily win the world cup because they are far and away the best team at the competition. Enthusiasm is good but keeping a grip of reality matters too.

Why we bringing up U20 in this ? Stick to the context please... I am not saying the Trinis will not be competitive all I am saying is US will dominate and win convincingly.

When did each team arrive to train there. Got to get used to the altitude.
