USMNT: Chandler drops out with hamstring injury

Once again, Timmy Chandler won't be with the U.S. national team. A hamstring injury forced the Eintracht Frankfurt defender to withdraw from the team preparing for Saturday's friendly against Venezuela and World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Trinidad & Tobago and Mexico.

Chandler left after 72 minutes in the German Cup final on Saturday. Eintracht Frankfurt lost to Borussia Dortmund, 2-1.

The 27-year-old defender just completed his best season in the Bundesliga. He started 31 league games and four cup games for Eintracht, which gave him a three-year contract extension through the 2019-20 season.

Chandler missed the March qualifiers, the first under new coach Bruce Arena, as he was suspended for the first game against Honduras. He picked up yellow cards in both Hexagonal matches in November 2016, his first appearance in qualifying for the USA since the opening game of the 2013 Hexagonal.

Since being first capped by the USA in 2011, Chandler has played in just three of 26 World Cup qualifiers.

Chandler was not expected to start for the USA against T&T and Mexico. DeAndre Yedlin is again healthy and expected to start at right back. In March, Geoff Cameron and Graham Zusi started the qualifiers against Honduras and Panama, respectively. Jorge Villafana is now the first choice at left back.

Other players available to play the outside back are DaMarcus Beasley and (in a pinch) Matt Besler and Tim Ream.

Chandler's withdrawal leaves 26 players in camp. The USA is training at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, site of the T&T game on June 8.

Hamstring injuries requires rest, stretching and muscle redevelopment.. follow the rules of track and field runners and you will never go wrong..The problem with these soccer players is they think their job is on the line if the don't come back and when they do they only at 80% recovery.. well guess what ? You can probably be back at 80% with other injuries but never a hamstring.. hamstring needs to be at 100% recovered otherwise expect reoccurrence.. sorry it's just how the body operates..

How many times has Chandler picked up a "muscle injury" in a match just before international duty. Particularly in scenarios where he most assuredly won't be the starter. Color me skeptical...

I agree with Paul Johnson - I don't think Chandler really wants to play for the US. I've never liked his attitude from day one!

He should be dropped forever. He's not a plus for the team at all.
