Big payoff for EPL clubs in first year of new television deal

English Premier League club Chelsea was paid more than $194 million for winning the 2016-17 title,  50 percent more than the top EPL earners in 2015-16. That's due to the new TV deal that paid out almost $3.1 billion to the league's 20 teams.

Only relegated Hull City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland were paid less than the highest-paid team, Arsenal, made in 2015-16.

-- one-half goes to the 20 teams in each parts;
-- one-quarter is based on TV appearances; and
-- one-quarter is based on the finish in the standings.
