USA-Sweden: Old nemesis awaits in Gothenburg

The USA will face Sweden for the first time since the Swedes knocked the USA out of the Olympics in the quarterfinals.

Sweden has been one of the toughest opponents for the USA in recent years. The Swedes are unbeaten in their last four meetings with the USA and have conceded just two goals in those four games.

U.S. head coach Jill Ellis has brought 19 players after Morgan Brian and Alex Morgan dropped out with injuries and Jaelene Hinkle withdrew for personal reasons. Lynn Williams was added to the roster after Morgan was injured in the UEFA Champions League final.

Besides Brian and Morgan, two other starters from the U.S. team that lost to Sweden in a shootout are not with the team. Hope Solo had her national team contract terminated after the game and Tobin Heath has been injured.

Sweden is preparing for Euro 2017 next month in the Netherlands, where it was drawn into Group B with Germany, Russia and Italy. Sweden easily qualified while winning seven games and losing one, to Denmark, after qualification had already been secured.

Sweden features Carolina Seger, who played with Morgan on European champion Lyon. Kosovare Asllani played at Manchester City with Carli Lloyd.

Thursday's meeting in Gothenburg will be the first of two games on the USA's Scandinavia trip. It will play Norway Sunday in Sandefjord.

Rapino should have been not called: TOO OLD ,has nothing to contribute for the future of the team. Ms. Press ,has no skills and can not shoot efficiently with both legs.. If the team fails to show solvency in the the next games ,please change the COACH .With a new knowledgeable manager we should have enough time to prepare for the next important world competitions

Isn't this the same coach the won the world cup? In any event, the point of every game this year (and early next year) for the USWNT is to build towards world cup qualification next fall. Results are secondary.

John, I agree. Beyond that she has already paid "too high" a price for her mistakes. She deserves, at least the opportunity.
