Open Cup: Amateur Christos FC aims to make history

Maryland powerhouse Christos FC (named after a Baltimore liquor store) hopes to join a small group of amateur teams that have beaten MLS teams when it faces D.C. United in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Four other amateur teams -- the Michigan Bucks twice -- have beaten MLS teams, but Christos FC would  become the first amateur team to advance past the fourth round since MLS teams first entered the competition  in 1996 if it beat D.C. United.

Open Cup upsets: Amateur vs. MLS
2012: Cal FC 1 Portland Timbers 0
2012: Michigan Bucks 3 Chicago Fire 2
2006: Dallas Roma 0 Chivas USA 0 (4-2 on PKs)
2000: Michigan Bucks 1 New England Revolution  0
2000: Chicago Sockers 0 Kansas City Wizards 0 (7-6 on PKs)

Christos FC has been a powerhouse in the USASA, winning a national double -- the U.S. Amateur Cup and Werner Fricker Open Cup -- a week apart in 2016, but it is making its first appearance in the Open Cup 20 years after its founding in 1997. It's also won Over-30 and Under-23 national titles.

Christos FC in the Open Cup:
FIRST ROUND: 3-0 at Fredericksburg FC (NPSL). Pete Caringi III opened the scoring in the fourth minute and added goals in the 50th and 87th minutes.
SECOND ROUND: 1-0 at Richmond Kickers (USL). Geaton Caltabiano's goal scored in the 79th minute gave Christos FC the win over the pro Kickers, who won the Open Cup in 1995, the last year before MLS clubs entered the tournament.
THIRD ROUND: 1-0 at Chicago FC United (PDL). Caringi found Levi Houpeau for a goal in the opening minute of the game and Christos FC held on for its third straight win.

Caringi, Caltabiano and Houpeau all played for Caringi's father, Pete, at UMBC. Most of the players are former college players from the Baltimore area.
