Gold Cup: Cubo Torres disappointed with Mexico omission

Erick Torres, who has resurrected his career with 10 goals for the Houston Dynamo, was disappointed that he's not included among 25 players on the experimental team Mexico will choose from for the Gold Cup.

"There is no doubt that being called on the 40-man roster there was hope to be there," "Cubo" told the Houston Chronicle through a translator. "I think I have had a good season thus far. I have worked very hard in order to be with the senior national team."

With El Tri competing at the Confederations Cup, its European-based players were not picked on the 40-player provisional roster from which 23 will go to the Gold Cup. Torres was the only non-Liga MX player on the list of 40 players.

Only subs Jesus Gallardo and Orbelin Pineda among the 14 players who faced the USA on Sunday are in the team.

Mexico 25:
Goalkeepers: Moises Munoz (Puebla), Jesus Corona (Cruz Azul), Miguel Fraga (Atlas).
Defenders: Raul Lopez (Pachuca), Luis Rodriguez (Tigres), Jorge Torres Nilo (Tigres), Jesus Molina (Monterrey), Carlos Vargas (Club America), Hedgardo Marin (Guadalajara), Hugo Ayala (Tigres), Cesar Montes (Monterrey), Jair Pereira (Chivas).
Midfielders: Jesus Gallardo (UNAM), Jorge Hernandez (Pachuca), Jesus Duenas (Tigres), Rodolfo Pizarro (Guadalajara), Javier Salas (Atlas), Jesus Isijara (Necaxa), Walter Sandoval (Santos).
Forwards: Orbelin Pineda (Guadalajara), Erick Gutierrez (Pachuca), Elias Hernandez (Leon), Martin Barragan (Necaxa), Alan Pulido (Guadalajara), Angel Sepulveda (Morelia).

El Tri is run by the owners of Liga MX teams. He has most certainly been told he won't get a look until he signs with a Mexican club. There should be no surprise on his part that this is the quid pro quo. It's always been this way.
