Germany using Confederations Cup to test young players

Defending World Cup champion Germany is resting many of its stars for the Confederations Cup, where the goal will be to measure the progress of young players called up for the eight-team tournament.

"On a sporting level, it is an important tournament where we can measure ourselves with other teams," team manager Oliver Bierhoff said. "The most important thing for us is to develop the players."

Among those absent: Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil, Marco Reus and Mats Hummels.

    Never understood the fuss some USMNT made about this tournament. Completely made up money spinner for FIFA and we see that the best team at this competition isn't taking it seriously. This tournament, as well as the second Gold Cup of each cycle, aren't too important.
