U.S. Abroad: European season starts early

The new European season starts early for three Americans who will be competing in the Europa League. Dion Acoff (Valur), Nermin Crnkic (FK Sarajevo) and Aaron Schoenfeld (Maccabi Tel Aviv) enter in the first qualifying round, which begins next Thursday.

They are among nine players -- four in the Champions League and five in the Europa League -- slated to take part in UEFA's two competitions.

2017-18 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE:
Second qualifying round (July 11-12, July 18-19):
Brian Span (IFK Mariehamn, Finland)
Opponent: Legia Warsaw (Poland).
Third qualifying round (July 25-26, Aug. 1-2):
Ethan Horvath (Club Brugge, Belgium)
Opponent: Legia Warsaw (Poland).
Group stage (starts Sept. 12-13):
Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham)
Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund)

2017-18 EUROPA LEAGUE:
First qualifying round (June 29, July 6):
Dion Acoff (Valur, Iceland)
Opponent: Ventspils (Latvia)
Nermin Crnkic (FK Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina)
Opponent: Zaria Balti (Moldova)
Aaron Schoenfeld (Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel)
Opponent: Tirana (Albania).
Second qualifying round (July 13, July 20):
Alex Horwath (Brann, Norway)
Opponent: Vojvodina/Ruzomberok winner.
Third qualifying round (July 27, Aug. 3):
Kenny Saief (Gent, Belgium)

    Miazga won't be playing for Vitesse next season. He was on loan last year.
