Confederations Cup: Germany relishes Chile showdown

Germany, the 2014 World Cup champion, and Chile, the 2015 Copa America and 2016 Copa Centenario winner, meet in the marquee match of the group stage at the Confederations Cup in Kazan on Thursday. Germany coach Joachim Loew says the game will be a huge opportunity for his young players.

“Our players need the experience of playing at this level against a team like Chile,” Loew said. “It will be important for their development. This experience will be excellent for us, for the players.”

Loew is expected to make several lineup changes from the team that beat Australia, 3-2, in the Group B opener. Chile should get Alexis Sanchez back. The Arsenal star has been recovering from a left ankle sprain and only played a few minutes off the bench in the 2-0 win against Cameroon.

WEDNESDAY. Making nine lineup changes from the team that tied Portugal, 2-2, in its opening game, Mexico struggled against New Zealand before rallying for a 2-1 win that gave El Tri the Group A lead. Javier Aquino was the inspiration for second-half goals by Raul Jimenez and Oribe Peralta. An early goal by Cristiano Ronaldo held up for a 1-0 Portugal win over host Russia.

You use young players you could lose. If Chile uses older players they can win. So what country really wants to win this game?
