Datebook: USA will face Costa Rica at Red Bull Arena

The USA will play Costa Rica in its second-to-last home game in the Hexagonal Sept. 1 at Red Bull Arena, home of the New York Red Bulls in Harrison, N.J. It has played at nine different venues in the New York tri-state area but never played a World Cup qualifier there.

U.S. Hexagonal Schedule:
September 1 in Harrison, N.J.

USA vs. Costa Rica
September 5 in San Pedro Sula
Honduras vs. USA
October 6 in Orlando, Florida
USA vs. Panama
October 10 in Port of Spain

Trinidad & Tobago vs. USA

The USA will enter the game in third place in the Hexagonal, escaping from the basement thanks to two wins and two ties under new head coach Bruce Arena.  It will take over second place from Costa Rica with a win.

Barring an unusual set of results in other matches, the USA will likely take third and qualify for the World Cup, perhaps as soon as at its home game Oct. 6 against Panama, if it wins its final two home games.

The USA has not lost to Costa Rica in a competitive match at home since the 1-0 loss to the Ticos that knocked it out of 1986 World Cup qualifying. It lost to Costa Rica, 1-0, in a friendly when they met at Red Bull Arena in October 2015.

In the first meeting in the Hexagonal, the USA fell to Costa Rica, 4-0. The result in San Jose cost Jurgen Klinsmann his job.

Hexagonal Standings:
PTS TEAM W-T-L +/-
14 Mexico 4-2-0 9/2
11 Costa Rica 3-2-1 9/4
8 USA 2-2-2 11/8
----------------------------

Mary Stock, "MNTs Bundesliga Boys" YouTube. I remember well Ecuador losing to the U.S. in the Copa Centenario 2016. The game that sent the US on to play Argentina in the semifinal. These guys had tears rolling down their cheeks. It meant so much to them. I felt for them.

"MNTs Bundesliga Boys" is back--on YouTube! (Still having trouble w/ Twitter) B/c new coaches can ruin a player's career. And often do. the first video looks at Bosz and Pulisic and makes some predictions. "Will it Be Ruination or Rise for Pulisic at the Hands of New Coach Peter Bosz This Year?"
