What They're Saying: Bruce Arena

“I think those people are pretty stupid, whoever they may be. Alejandro is a very good player. In the three- or four-week period we’ve been together, he continues to demonstrate that.”

-- U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena, on detractors of Alejandro Bedoya, his captain for the Panama and Nicaragua games at the Gold Cup. (MLSSoccer.com)

Surprisingly, I fully agree with Mr. Arena.

For me, Bedoya has always been the consummate professional. His ability to combine in short passing sequences to maintain possession has always impressed me. He is always a stabilizing element on defense and is often paired with backs whose defensive prowess is suspect. And finally, he plied his trade at the highest level possible for him. It's definitely time that he received the praise due him!

Always interesting when someone is described as "a very good" player....
Sounds like a bare minimum to make the national team.
