U.S. Abroad: McKennie earns praise from Schalke boss

First, Christian Pulisic on Tuesday, now Weston McKennie on Wednesday. A pair of American teenagers are showing off their talents with some nifty work for their German clubs on tour in China.

McKennie set up the first goal with a perfectly placed pass to Amine Harit in Schalke 04's 3-2 win over Turkish champion Besiktas in the first game of its Chinese tour. Fellow American Haji Wright also started for Schalke.

Second-half subs Luke Hemmerich and Yevhen Konoplyanka scored the other goals as Schalke raced out to a 3-0 win advantage before Besiktas responded.

New coach Domenico Tedesco praised his team for its performance in humid conditions in Zhuhai and the goals it created.

“The goal to make it 1-0 from Weston McKennie was created very well,” said Tedesco. "Both of the other goals were also impressive, as they came from a change in tempo."

Schalke's second friendly in China will be played Friday against Italian club Inter Milan in Changzhou.
