The USA had already staked out a 2-0 lead over El Salvador when the game degenerated in the second half. In separate incidents in the penalty area, El Salvador defender Henry Romero bit Jozy
Altidore on the back of his left shoulder and twisted his nipple. Afterwards, another U.S. player said he too had been bitten.
"My girl's mad at me," Altidore said. "She's mad at me. She's mad at Romero, 'cause she's like: 'Only I can bite you, only I can grab
Whatever Romero's motives, it worked. Canadian referee Drew Fischer did not punish Romero for the incident in the 57th minute and Altidore, incredulous with what
happened, was ineffective for the rest of the game.
"It's never happened before," he said, "but in Concacaf it never ceases to amaze me."
Omar Gonzalez said San Jose
Earthquakes midfielder Darwin Ceren also bit him on the back of his left shoulder late in the game.
