U.S. Abroad: Only two Gold Cup champs start in Liga MX

Liga MX produced four U.S. Gold Cup champions, but only two played in their first weekend back home: Omar Gonzalez (Pachuca) and Joe Corona (Tijuana). Both clubs suffered their second loss in two games.

Xolos, winners of the first phase of the two haves to the 2016-17 season, have not scored in the two games. Paul Arriola was on the bench for the 1-0 loss at Necaxa, as were fellow Americans Alejandro Guido and Michael Orozco.

Gonzalez went the distance for Pachuca in a 2-0 loss at home to Club America. Jorge Villafana, the third U.S. starter in the Gold Cup final from Liga MX along with Gonzalez and Arriola, did not dress for Santos.

Jonathan Gonzalez, 18, started his second straight game for Monterrey but exited in the 41st minute.

GERMANY. The only American who started on the opening weekend of the German second division season was Alfredo Morales of relegated FC Ingolstadt, a 1-0 loser to Union Berlin.
