Big win for American coach in Germany

German third division VfL Osnabrueck, coached by American Joe Enochs, had a four-game winless run to start the 2017-18 season, but on Sunday upset Bundesliga Hamburg SV, 3-1, in the German Cup. American Bobby Wood  scored HSV's late consolation goal.

Enochs, the Californian who played on Germany in 1996-2008 and set a Osnabrueck club record by appearing in 376 games, guided Osnabrueck to a fifth-place finish in his first season at the helm in 2015-16 season. It spent the early part of the 2016-17 season in the promotion zone but slipped to a sixth-place finish. It started this season off with two ties and tie losses and sits in 19th place of the 20 team third division.

But on Sunday, Osnabrueck pulled off one of its biggest wins in club history, jumping to a 3-0 lead in its sold out (15,700) Bremer Brücke stadium before Wood scored from the penalty spot in 73rd minute.

Osnabrueck scored all three of its goals in the first-round German Cup game playing short-handed following Marcel Appiah's 18th minute ejection for a DOGSO foul on Wood.
