'Brilliant' Pulisic puts Borussia Dortmund on top

Who needs Ousmane Dembele when you have Christian Pulisic?

The 18-year-old American needed all of 22 minutes to score his first Bundesliga goal of the season and later added an assist as Borussia Dortmund opened the campaign with a 3-0 win at Wolfsburg.

Pulisic, who also scored against Bayern Munich two weeks earlier in the German Super Cup, fired a shot from outside the area that slipped inside the far post. It was followed by goals by Spaniard Marc Bartra and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the latter after taking a pass from Pulisic.

The game was the first league game under new Dutch coach Peter Bosz, who arrived from Ajax in the offseason. If there were any doubts about how Pulisic would adjust under a new coach, he quickly put them to rest as Bosz described Pulisic and German World Cup champion Mario Goetze, recovering from a long layoff, as "similarly brilliant."

Bosz admires complete effort. "Christian Pulisic is still very young," said Bosz afterward, "but did really well today -- and not just because of his goal. He was all over the field, created lots of dangerous situations and played really well."

Pulisic's value to the BVB attack has grown as it was playing without Dembele, who remains suspended as he has refused to train while seeking a transfer to Barcelona.

Pulisic grades goal: 'B.' "I would probably give my goal a B grade," the 18-year-old said after the game. "Marc's goal was a little bit better, an A for his effort. I think I just got the ball at my feet and I kind of just saw an opening, so I just went for it and aimed for the back post and luckily it went in."

Pulisic, who had already scored in the German Supercup against Bayern Munich, said he was pleased to start off the league season with a big away victory.

"We wanted to come out here today with a lot of confidence and show what we're all about and we were able to do that and get a nice win," Pulisic said afterwards. "That was our goal: We wanted to go out and wanted to be really aggressive right from the first minute and I think we showed that."

Agree with his B assessment on the goal, but giving him an A on that amazing assist.

I thought it was a very nice goal. He saw it in congested space and just saw it and hit it. He did not have to think about it. I thought it was a great goal.

Enjoyed Dortmund play. Notice how the second goal scored was very nice, for the player had to look up ,aim, giving the right touch and spin and place it from an angle, but more importantly, to take into account for it came from the foot of a central defender, who appeared all the way into the opponent's penalty. Very few central defenders have that kind of skill and awareness with the ball. Bosz has given Dormund an Ajax flair of play. Notice the initial "lead in" pass from the backfield to midfield, from the center back to a midfielder was perfect. It was hard low to the correct foot ,allowing a continuity of play to the next station... I think insiders of the game are going to enjoy watching Dortmund play under Bosz for he has raised the quality of passing. This coaching change is the best thing for Pulisic. I've noticed already how Pulisic is trying to give hard instep low passes which he didn't do last year, thus grown his technical passing capabilities. As a matter of fact if you notice Pulisic's position of his body, kicking the ball with hard with the insight of his instep within the space he was allowed to shoot. This is all part and parcel of him learning to pass hard medium range passes on the ground with his instep, something no players on the USMNT are capable of doing. Bosz is allowing lots of horizontal positional switching on the front line thus giving Pulisic space to run where he wants. Also note how Bosz has chosen the balances his flanks, which is the left flank basically the attack flank thus allowing the space to be created on the right flank side for Pulisic and others to take advantage. It is going to be interesting this afternoon how Guardiola will structure Man.City to play.

Frank - Aside from the fact that I'll assume what you meant to write was what no "other" players on the USMNT are capable of doing, considering well Pulisic is in fact on the USMNT, your assessment that no other US player can hit a low hard pass with their instep is ludicrous. Everyone acknowledges the US is not the top of the pyramid when it comes to brilliant technical masterclass but come on. The rest of your assessment regarding Dortmunds style of play I agree with wholeheartedly, but if your going to bash the USMNT try and refrain from flippant statements that should come with a healthy dose of qualifications if your intention is to actually make a point.

Soccer dad, Anyone can hit a low hard pass but not with accuracy, that separates the man from the boys. It just so happens SA has a video today, perfectly showing this.
Because it is a hard pass to execute most will employ their inside of the foot. Try watching Dailey Blind of Manchester United, he also does it well for when he came to ManUtd ,he likewise was not good at giving a good lead in pass with the instep in the his first year with ManUtd but he has it down. This pass is a very difficult pass to learn for it requires accuracy to correct from a distance. Accuracy is much more easier when applying the inside of the foot pass as compared to the instep for it takes more control , aim , and hutzpah to do it.

Soccer dad, BTW, Pulisic hasn't got it down 100 % as yet but he is much further along in able to do it than his teammates on the USMNT. I would suggest for you not to get emotional offended and immediately accuse someone of bashing when he is just giving a technical evaluation . Let us just keep the soccer discussion on an adult level. Have a nice day....

To explain the difference in golfing terms, the inside of the foot is a putter and the instep is a driver. Pulisic's cross worked because it was driven fast enough to get past the first defender and the keeper who was guarding against a shot rather than a cross.

  8. frank schoon, August 21, 2017 at 12:31 p.m.

True, Bob, but his cross had a bent to in which accuracy is not 100% warranted for the scorer can still adjust coming to the cross ,thereby in this case you're able to have some play in it. But the pass that I"m talking about is low hard on the ground (most of the time) straight as an arrow(meaning no bent to it or in dutch "candle straight as a line)coming to the player in the fastest possible manner.

A money player is some one who can score in congested space. So a player scoring off a horizontal takeover or off a back heal or off a cryuff move is a valuable player like Donadoni was a spectacular player. I would love to see Christian work on shooting off rage cryuff.

  10. frank schoon, August 21, 2017 at 2:18 p.m.

Nick, what did you mean by "off rage"?. Never heard of that term...

  11. Nick Daverese, August 21, 2017 at 2:24 p.m.

I wish this site has a correct spelling part. Change rage for the word The

  12. frank schoon replied, August 21, 2017 at 2:31 p.m.

Nick, I know, i'm going nuts too. Bob had mentioned earlier how the program is so messed that you can't read what you have written before posting. Sometimes when I read my own post after, some words spelled are totally not what I've written. BTW check out the video,

Are you guys typing on a smartphone or on a computer? Don't blame the website...it can't fix your errors. Look into your word processing software. I always try to proof my submittals because autocorrect on Apple smartphones doesn't really "get" a lot of soccer terms, so it changes the wording a lot. Again, look into your spellcheck-type software. I still miss some of autocorrect's changes...I'm in too much of a hurry before I submit. But there's really no excuse; shame on me. So, check your software; the Soccer America site is not causing your typos, grammatical errors or poor sentences structure.

  14. Bob Ashpole replied, August 22, 2017 at 6:08 p.m.

Thanks Ginger for the tip. This is a new change in Windows 10. Prior operating systems did not have a spell check feature. Duh. Which is why I thought it was the website software.

Also many websites have an "edit" feature which allows a poster to go back and fix errors after a post has been made. Would be nice to have here.

I think a poor education caused most of my errors. That's what happens when you do not go to grammer school after kindergarten. But I got a great street education. I went back to school at 15 and still graduated a catholic HS barely. But I knew I had no interest in going to college. Mom had no money for books and I made money in HS selling football cards.
