The USA opened play at the 2017 Vaclav Jezek Tournament, its tuneup for the Under-17 World Cup in India, with a 4-1 win over Hungary, which had lost in a U-17 qualifying playoff to France for Europe's
fifth spot in India. Josh Sargent
, winner of the Silver Boot at the Under-20 World Cup, led the USA with two goals. Andrew Carleton
had a goal and an assist while Timothy
scored the other U.S. goal.
The USA led 2-0 at the break, but Hungary drew to within 2-1 and had a chance to equalize before the USA broke the game with two goals, the second on
a free kick in the final seconds.
The USA, which won the 2016 Vaclav Jezek Tournament, plays Russia on Wednesday in the village of Brozany nad Ohri (population: 1,100) and Japan on Friday
in Lhota. Placement games will be played on Saturday.
