What They're Saying: Steve Birnbaum

“We’re playing for the Red Bulls to not make the playoffs. It’s nothing new. They don’t like us, and we don’t like them. It would be nice to ruin that for them.”

-- D.C. United captain Steve Birnbaum after the 3-3 tie with the Red Bulls. United is last in MLS's Eastern Conference but will host the sixth-place Red Bulls again on the final day of the MLS season in the last game at RFK Stadium. (Washington Post)

Geez. This garbage DC team has only made the playoffs twice in five years and Red Bulls eliminated them both times. Now all they are resigned to being spoilers. Sorry Steve, this Red Bulls team blew it again last night but it's so easy to make the MLS playoffs they will likely make it anyway.

Hey Fire Paul Gardner Now, you haven't got a clue as to what you are talking about. DCU has made the playoffs 4 of the last 5 seasons:

    2016 Lost to Montreal
    2015 Lost to NYRB
    2014 Lost to NYRB
    2013 —— no playoffs
2012 Houston Conf Final (and beat NYRB 1st round)

Props to Birnbaum! He's doing exactly what a captain should be doing to motivate his team at the end of a bad season. Sorry that bothers you. Maybe your Red Bulls should have just gotten the win (sometime in the last 8 games).
