USMNT: Decision on interim coach to be made in week or two

Bruce Arena's resignation following the USA's elimination from the 2018 World Cup came as no surprise. But a decision on a permanent replacement will not be made soon. An interim coach will be needed, however.

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati expects a decision soon on the interim coach for the one or two friendlies the USA will play in November.

If it had finished third and qualified directly for the World Cup, it would have likely played two games with split squads, one in Europe, the other at home. He said one game will be played in Europe, and likely the second as well.

“In the end it’s my final decision," said Gulati. "But we have a search committee. We go through a process. In the short term, that’ll come down to three or four of us that are part of that process for the November decision. That’s much easier. And the longer-term decision will have a group of people that will look at this and maybe take a little bit longer. So there might be a change in that process, but it’s never been a singular decision.”

Even though the USA did not qualify, Gulati expects the USA to play on all the FIFA dates in 2018.

"We’ll have a full program of games," he said, "and I expect us to play on all the FIFA dates as well as some games prior to the [2018] World Cup with teams that are going to the World Cup, or not, and want friendly games so we’ll have a full calendar of games.”

I think the interim coach should be someone that is willing to work for another coach if he himself is not selected for the job. The program needs stability and if you have an interim coach just to babysit then your are not justiisy to the players that will be playing in the friendlies.  Maybe one of the current assistant USMNT coaches could handle the next two friendly games.  Give the job to Dave Sarachan.

I beleive that we need an American coach.  So I would like to see Dave Sarachan or Sigi Schmidt given the opportunity to coach the USMNT,  I would also seriously consider Tab Ramos.
