MLS Decision Day: Toronto FC's quest for dominance, wild scramble for positions

Toronto FC, which will play at Atlanta United on Sunday before what will be another MLS record crowd, is first in the Eastern Conference and the runaway winner of the Supporters' Shield.

It needs only one more point and one more win to break league records in a season for those marks. Even more impressive, TFC currently holds a 12-point lead over second-place New York City FC, which would shatter the record for the margin of victory in the Supporters' Shield race (10 points by which the Galaxy won the 1998 Supporters' Shield race).

Only two of the 12 playoff positions in the final MLS standings have been decided heading into Sunday's Decision Day. Besides TFC's first-place finish in the Eastern Conference, the New York Red Bulls will finish sixth in the Eastern Conference.

After that, it's a wild scramble. Four teams could finish second the Eastern Conference, three teams could win the Western Conference or finish second, and three teams are contending for the one spot that remains up for grabs in the playoffs -- sixth place in the Western Conference.

Eastern Conference: second place. New York City FC is in the driver's seat for the second bye in the Eastern Conference. But three other teams -- Chicago, Atlanta United and Columbus -- all have a shot at leapfrogging NYCFC, which has to play the Crew at Citi Field in Queens because of another conflict at Yankee Stadium.

Western Conference: first and second place. Vancouver, which could have clinched first place in the Western Conference with a win over San Jose last Sunday, is still one of three teams along with Portland and Seattle that can take first place. Sporting KC can't overtake Vancouver for first place but still has an outside shot at second place.

Western Conference: sixth place. San Jose holds sixth place over FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake. All three teams are at home on Sunday but only the Quakes control their own destiny.
