NASL Playoff Race: Cosmos clinch final berth to head to postseason for fifth straight year

They needed to wait until the last day of the regular season, but the two-time defending champion New York Cosmos clinched a berth in the NASL playoffs for the fifth straight year with a 5-2 win over Puerto Rico FC at MCU Park.

The Cosmos needed at least a draw as the Jacksonville Armada won, 2-0, at the San Francisco Deltas.

Argentine Emmanuel Ledesma scored the first hat trick for the Cosmos in 2017 to finish the season with 10 goals.  Retiring captain Carlos Mendes (photo) scored his first goal of the season, while Lucky Mkosanaalso scored.

“The attitude today was fantastic," said Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese. "Our second half was one of the best we’ve had all season. The spirit of the team was great and we couldn’t have done better to help Carlos Mendes retire at home on this beautiful night.”

Championship sweep. Miami swept the spring and fall championships with a 2-1 win over FC Edmonton in the rain to clinch the second half of the NASL season Kwadwo Poku scored both Miami goals.
