The Cosmos won the league title in their inaugural 2013 season, reached the semis in 2014, and lifted the crown in 2015 and 2016.
Miami (61 goals) and the Cosmos (56) were the highest scoring teams in the regular seasons but failed to hit the net on Sunday as Cosmos has a 16-14 edge on shots. Cosmos keeper Jimmy Maurer made five saves and saved two spot kicks in the shootout. Eugene Starikov converted shootout decider.
Tyler Gibson’s fourth goal of the year, a strike assisted by Kyle Becker in the 40th minute, gave San Francisco its 1-0 over North Carolina.
