Telstar 18 introduced as official ball of the 2018 World Cup

The official ball of the 2018 World Cup -- Telstar 18 -- is being introduced as a throwback to the original adidas Telstar ball used at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

It was billed as the "star of television," the first ball to be decorated with black panels and a pattern designed to stand out on black and white televisions.

Telstar 18 has a new carcass that adidas describes as retaining the best of the Brazuca, the 2014 World Cup official ball while adding new technology, including an embedded NFC chip.

: “The original Telstar is one of the most iconic soccer balls of all time and one which changed soccer design forever, so developing the Telstar 18 while staying true to the original model was a really exciting challenge for us. The new panel structure and inclusion of an NFC chip has taken soccer innovation and design

    Would be nice to play with a pure leather ball for a change and only use the other ball when it rains.

    Bring back the leather ball, rain or shine, to MLS...most of the players would be more competent handling it.

    IW, I don't know if you ever played with one, but they are so nice. I'm sure today they could probably put some chemical on the leather to keep it from getting waterlogged...

    The old leather balls would absorb water as I am sure you already know causing serious long term brain damage to professional players similar to what we are now seeing in American football.
