The Italian squad did not qualify because it lacked the top quality players of previous generations. There is not player on this squad that comes close to the Maldini et al generation of quality and execution.

Iwn, always a positive note. Hardly a consolation but at least the USA is in good company. Italy is historically in the top 3 in the world. They too will survive.

This was no surprise...just look at what has happened to ACMilan over the past 15 years. This team once set the tone in Italian soccer in the 90's  now it is just mere shell of what it once was. When you see players like Michael Bradley even play for Roma, tells you the pickens is getting slim. Great teams like Juventus has only 3 italians who in the late to mid thirties. , Napoli jus one. Roma that drew with Chelsea 3-3 only had one italian on the field. I thought the WC'14 was the worse of all World cups but now I think WC 2018  will top it.
