Former French star Joel Bats will join Impact coaching staff

Joel Bats, France's starting goalkeeper when it won the 1984 European Championship, will leave Lyon, where he has been the goalkeeper coach since 2000, to join former Lyon coach Remi Garde with MLS's Montreal Impact.

Bats, 60, will leave Lyon at the end of the year and join Garde, who was recently hired to replace Mauro Biello, and former Lyon and French national team trainer Robert Duverne

Bats, who played 50 times for France, was Paris St. Germain's head coach for one season (1998-99) before moving to Lyon.

He is credited with developing goalkeepers Gregory Coupet, Hugo Lloris, the current French national team captain, and French-born Anthony Lopes, who plays for Portugal.
