NCAA Division I Women's Tournament: Dream comes true for Princeton coach

Abby Givens scored in the 99th minute to give Princeton a 2-1 win over No. 1 regional seed North Carolina in the biggest upset of this year's NCAA Division I Women's Tournament.

UNC had a big edge in shots -- 24-9 -- but the Tigers scored first in the 4th minute when UNC keeper Samantha Leshnak came out to clear a ball away, but it caromed off the foot of a Tar Heel defender and rolled inside the left post. That lead lasted until the 25th minute when UNC's Bridgette Andrzejewski struck back with a rocket to tie it up.

The loss extended Carolina's streak to five seasons without a national title, the longest for the Tar Heels, who previously never went more than two years without winning an NCAA championship.

Third-year coach Sean Driscoll had remarked all week how big an opportunity it was to go up against Carolina coach Anson Dorrance, who has won 21 NCAA titles.

"Anson Dorrance is the reason I coach women's soccer," said the Princeton coach. "Many years ago, I had a chance to sit next to him and he inspired me to get into the profession. He took the time to talk to some new coach, and I never forgot that, so to stand across the way from, easily, my idol, was pretty overwhelming today."

Driscoll added it was a dream come true to play Carolina.

"I told the kids this morning, I woke up at four, I was staring at the ceiling," he said. "It was like Christmas Day, the opportunity. I wasn't nervous, I was just so excited to get a chance to play against what has been the best program in women's soccer."
