Rapids confident new Swede Blomberg will boost their attack

The Colorado Rapids, who had the third worst record and second worst attack in MLS in 2017, made their first offseason signing with the acquisition of Swedish attacking midfielder Johan Blomberg from Allsvenskan runner-up AIK Fotboll.

The 30-year-old Blomberg had three goals and six assists in 28 league appearances in his third season with AIK and played in five Europa League qualifiers. He played in the Europa League all three seasons with AIK. Before that, he played three seasons apiece for Angelholm (all three in the second division) and Halmstadt (one in the second division and two in the first division).

“We have had an eye on Johan for quite some time and he is someone who we believe will add an extra creative dimension to our team,” said Rapids sporting director and interim general manager Padraig Smith. “Johan fits into the way we want to play and we’re confident he will improve our team -- especially on the attacking side. He is a versatile, forward-thinking player who possesses the creativity and game intelligence to make an impact in this league.”

The Rapids already has two Swedes on their team: former Marquette University star Axel Sjoberg and Mohammed Saeid, who previously played for Columbus and Minnesota United.
